Skills white paper: Not just a job
Employment analyses in renewables can have distinct functions:
- To demonstrate the economic benefits of a project or the industry as a whole
- To promote the employment opportunities in the industry
- To identify potential workforce constraints.
The first of these is an important part of making the case for an industry. We have undertaken these analyses for numerous clients all over the world. Because they are typically top-down studies, considering how expenditure flows down the supply chain, they have historically been less well suited to the second two functions because these require an understanding of the specific occupations and not just the high-level numbers. At the same time, we are finding an increased demand for these more granular studies, mainly because of the interest in how renewables can address social challenges and enable a Just Transition.
We have tackled all these types of analysis but a challenge has been to integrate these into a single process. To tackle this, we have just published a white paper on a fresh approach, available here. We’d welcome the chance to discuss it with industry.
