Ports for offshore wind:101 and the solutions

Ports are critical to offshore wind projects, supporting manufacturing, assembly, installation, and operations. Bigger turbines require more space, longer quays, higher load-bearing and deeper access channels. Floating wind also needs wet storage and more complex logistics.

Port upgrades to meet these demands can exceed €100 million. This is much more than expected revenues from a typical offshore wind project.

Bruce Valpy outlined solutions to these challenges in his Ports for offshore wind:101 and the solutions presentation to the recent RECHARGE Wind Power Summit 2026 Asia-Pacific. He highlighted that stronger government policy and clarity, coordinated industrial strategies will encourage the required inward investment. Bruce also said that more flexible approaches such as multi-use ports, hub-and-feeder models will be needed..
